Much modern statistical work is carried out with the aid of computers. The aim of the Computing and Statistics programme is to equip you with a basic competence in statistics, along with computing skills that will enable you to work in organisations that base decisions on statistical analysis or develop software. In particular, our aim is to give you: a grasp of probability and the most common methods of statistical data analysis an understanding of the main tasks that are carried out as software is built and maintained, such as analysis, design, programming and evaluation the ability to manipulate abstract concepts and use them to find solutions to practical problems the qualities that come with being a graduate in any discipline: specialist knowledge, intellectual self-confidence and independence, analytical ability and the life-long learning skills needed to keep up with fast-changing technologies.
